About

Where We Operate

Merion recovers commercial debts where the debtor is based in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales or the Australian Capital Territory. Your own business can be based anywhere — since all of our recovery activity is conducted by post, email, SMS and phone, your location has no bearing on what we can do. But the debtor needs to be in one of those four jurisdictions.

Queensland

We work accounts across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Cairns and regional Queensland. Construction and trade debt is particularly common here given Queensland's building sector activity; we also work a significant volume of hospitality and healthcare accounts. For smaller disputed claims, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) handles civil claims up to $25,000 — worth knowing if a matter escalates past our recovery process.

Victoria

We recover accounts across Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and regional Victoria. Victoria has a strong manufacturing and wholesale sector alongside professional services, and we handle debt recovery in both. VCAT (the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal) covers civil disputes to $100,000 under the Civil Claims List — one of the most accessible small-claims paths in Australia for a creditor who decides to go further than we can take them.

New South Wales

Accounts across Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast and regional NSW are within our coverage. NSW has a high proportion of professional services, property and construction clients. The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) hears general civil claims up to $40,000. Debt from contracts and unpaid invoices sits squarely in its jurisdiction for amounts below that threshold.

Australian Capital Territory

The ACT is one of our more active jurisdictions given Canberra's concentration of professional services, government contractors and healthcare providers. The ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT) has jurisdiction over civil disputes to $25,000. ACT businesses tend to have well-documented credit arrangements, which makes account verification straightforward and the recovery process cleaner than average.

If your debtor is based in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory, we cannot currently take the account. Contact us and we can point you toward appropriate options in those states.

How coverage works in practice

Since Merion operates remotely, there is no difference in how we handle an account whether the debtor is in Brisbane or Canberra. One team, one consistent process, one portal. The only thing that changes by jurisdiction is which set of consumer protection and licensing rules applies to us — and we are set up correctly for all four.

Coverage for a specific account depends on where the debtor is actually located, not where the original transaction happened or where you are based. If you are not sure, tell us what you know about the debtor's location when you make your referral and we will confirm whether we can take it.

What about international accounts?

We do not currently offer international debt recovery. Our process, compliance framework and licensed practitioners are built for Australian jurisdictions. Trying to extend that to international recovery without the right structure would mean worse results, not better ones.
