Accreditations & Memberships
AICM Membership
Merion is a member of the Australian Institute of Credit Management (AICM) — the peak professional body for credit management in Australia. The AICM advocates for the credit profession, sets ethical and professional standards for its members, and provides education, certification and industry intelligence to practitioners across the country. Membership reflects our commitment to conducting debt recovery in accordance with the highest professional standards in the industry, not merely the minimum required by law.
ACCC & ASIC Debt Collection Guideline
Merion operates in full accordance with the ACCC and ASIC joint debt collection guideline for collectors and creditors (RG 96). This guideline governs contact frequency, communication standards, hardship obligations and fair dealing requirements. It sets out what a collector can and cannot do, how disputes must be handled, how hardship must be assessed, and what disclosures must be made. We apply it to every account we manage — not as a checklist, but as the foundation of how we operate. Clients who refer accounts to us can be confident that every contact made on their behalf meets these standards.
Privacy Act 1988 & Australian Privacy Principles
We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Personal information collected in the course of a recovery — including names, contact details, financial information and correspondence — is used only for the purpose for which it was collected, stored securely, and not disclosed to third parties except as permitted or required by law. Our privacy policy is available here.
State Fair Trading Acts
Where our work involves consumer accounts or is governed by state-based consumer protection legislation, we comply with the applicable Fair Trading Acts of Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. This includes obligations around misleading conduct, unconscionable behaviour, and fair dealing. Our standard operating procedures are reviewed against state requirements to ensure compliance across all jurisdictions where we operate.
Professional Indemnity & Insurance
Merion holds professional indemnity insurance appropriate to the scale and nature of our operations. Our insurance position is reviewed annually. Clients and counterparties requiring confirmation of coverage may contact us directly.
Financial Disclosures
We publish details of our fee structures, commission arrangements and material financial relationships on our Financial Disclosures page. We believe transparency about how we are paid is a basic obligation — our clients and the people we contact should understand our commercial interests and how they are managed.
Our commitments
Accreditations and compliance frameworks set the floor. These are the commitments we make above that floor:
- We treat every debtor with dignity — firm contact does not require disrespect.
- We communicate clearly: who we are, who we act for, what is owed, and what options are available.
- We assess hardship fairly and promptly, and we do not use hardship disclosures as leverage.
- We are fully transparent on fees — our clients know exactly what we charge before any account is referred.
- We do not engage in misleading conduct — no false urgency, no misrepresented authority, no exaggerated consequences.
- We do not harass — contact is professional, purposeful and within the frequency limits set by the guideline.
If you believe our conduct has not met these standards, contact us directly. We take complaints seriously and respond to every one.
