A letter of demand is a formal, written request for payment of an amount recorded as outstanding. It is one of the most common steps in commercial debt recovery, and receiving one is routine — it does not mean court proceedings have begun.
A letter of demand from Merion will set out the original creditor, the amount claimed, what the amount relates to, and a reference number unique to your account. It also explains how to respond — by paying, by proposing a payment arrangement, or by raising a dispute.
The purpose of the letter is to give you clear information and a fair opportunity to resolve the matter before it is escalated any further. The most useful thing you can do is respond to it — even if that response is simply a question.
