What happens if a debtor disputes the account?

For businesses

A debtor raising a dispute is a normal part of recovery, not a sign that something has gone wrong. When it happens, recovery activity on the account is generally paused while the dispute is reviewed.

We assess the dispute on its substance. We will come back to you, as the creditor, for the information needed to respond — the invoices, the contract or terms of trade, proof of delivery or completion, and the account history. A well-documented account is straightforward to defend; a thin one is harder.

If the dispute has no genuine basis, recovery resumes. If it raises a legitimate issue, we will discuss it with you and agree how to proceed. Either way, you are kept informed throughout — you are never left wondering where an account stands.
